Volunteers are an essential part of SFMHS and the San Francisco Museum at the Mint project.

A list of current volunteer opportunities can be found below. We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers who want to put their skills, talents, and experience to work for San Francisco History. General Office Assistants

General Office Assistants help SFMHS run more smoothly! These volunteers provide much needed help with administrative tasks such as processing surveys, inputting transactions into our database, preparing materials for monthly programs, fulfilling book orders, compiling and managing guest lists for events, and much more. Training is offered on-the-job.

Old Mint Tour Docents

Old Mint Tour Docents give SFMHS members and special visitors a special look into the history of this national historic landmark. Docents guide visitors through the Mint's production rooms, ceremonial spaces, and basement vaults, all of which have been vacant for over a decade. A training manual and guided individual training prepare docents to lead these 60-90 minute tours.

Barbary Coast Trail® Docents

Barbary Coast Trail Docents bring history to the public! Docents conduct walking tours of the 3.8 mile historical trail through Union Square, Chinatown, the Financial District, and the waterfront. The trail is divided into four parts. Training is individually designed and includes observing tours, mastering tour information, developing a tour script or outline, attending tour techniques workshop and presenting practice tours.

Special Events Coordinator

Special Event Coordinators assist SFMHS in planning and executing special events, small fundraising programs, "behind-the-scenes" and other "members-only" events. Coordinators collaborate with staff members to develop event concepts, logistics, pricing, budget and format. They provide important support to SFMHS' membership program and fiscal health.

Special Event Crew Members

Event Crew Members make SFMHS events possible! Responsibilities include assisting with event set-up, visitor registration or check-in, food and wine service, and clean-up after events. Volunteers will assist with a wide variety of tasks and could be on their feet for several hours. Training will generally take place on the job or immediately before the event.

Exhibit Hosts

Exhibit Hosts share history with the public at the Old Mint! Responsibilities include receiving admission fees, directing visitors to exhibit galleries, answering visitor questions, and providing basic security in exhibit galleries. Training in building security and exhibit content is provided before a volunteer's first shift.

Exhibit Crew Members

Exhibit Crew Members work behind the scenes to bring history to the public at the Old Mint! Volunteers assist with various activities to produce exhibits. Crew Members might help with cataloging exhibit items; installing and hanging exhibit displays, framed works, text panels and labels; de-installing exhibits; packing and unpacking exhibit materials. Training is provided on the job.
