"Kevin Starr and Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo’sCalifornio Dream"by Rose Marie Beebe Ph.D. &Robert Senkewicz Ph.D.Presented by University of San Francisco and the
San Francisco Historical Society
The experiences of Mexicans who were living in California when it was annexed by the United States is a crucial element in our state’s past. These Californios, as they called themselves, made California’s identity diverse and multi-cultural from the moment it became part of the United States. But, as Kevin Starr pointed out years ago in the very first volume of his classic Americans and the California Dream series, diversity and multi-culturalism were not always appreciated in nineteenth-century California, especially northern California. Californios were often especially unwelcome. Join Dr. Beebe and Dr. Senkewicz as they uncover this history.
"The History of the French Hospitalof San Francisco"by Professor Annick FoucrierBy The French Mutual Benevolent Society
Many French people participated in the California Gold Rush. They came from all over France and its colonies. Faced with the uncertainties of illness and death, and not speaking English, these immigrants found strength in their French speaking community. In 1851, they formed a mutual benefit membership society, along the lines of an HMO, that employed doctors and built a hospital. Over time, the number of members increased, as did the services provided by the hospital to the French community and the residents of San Francisco at large. This broadcast presented the history of the French Hospital in the 19th century, placing it within the context of the French immigrant presence in California.
