Florence Lundborg’s Mural for the PPIE

Florence Lundborg’s mural for the PPIE, “The Riches of California—The Opulent Summer,” was published in black-and-white many times during the time of the Exposition but never in color. In 1990, when the San Francisco War Memorial unfurled the mural for the first time since it entered their possession, they photographed details of the mural in color. The Argonaut does not print figures in color; however, these details are such a unique opportunity to view the mural as it was seen by the Exposition visitors in 1915, the San Francisco Historical Society has kindly made them available via their website. Figure 16a is the left side detail showing Florence Lundborg’s signature in the lower left corner. Figure 16b is the mid-left detail showing the harvesters with baskets of fruit and flowers. Figure 16c is the center detail showing the arched doorway and painted border. Figure 16d is the mid-right detail showing more harvesters and the background landscape. Figure 16e is the right side detail showing an example of the border inscription. Figure 16f is the detail showing a damaged portion of the mural.
