Historic U.S. Mint Vault

Permanent

Vault 1 PNG_edited.png

The Museum of San Francisco marks the site of the first U.S. branch mint in the West. Montgomery Street, one-half block away, marks the original waterline of Yerba Buena Cove.

Visitors can peer into the underground brick vault where gold was once stored. The vault also contains numerous historic artifacts that were used when the mint was in operation. From the grand room (main exhibit hall) visitors can peak into the vault from the top via a gorgeous glass enclosure.

To learn more about the vault and mint, we highly encourage visitors to attend one of our free Saturday docent tours that occur at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.
